With Mouseflow, you can associate additional information with a session and highlight certain actions performed on your website by using tags.

By tagging Recordings, you can apply filters across all Mouseflow features and isolate a broad segment of visitors based on your own data.

Built-in Tags

There are some tags like Form-Interact, Form-Submit and Feedback as well as tags for friction events like Click-Rage, Speed-Browsing and Bounce that are already set up for your account. Mouseflow automatically tags user sessions including such events to help you understand at a glance the user behavior in Recordings.

Custom Tags

In addition, creating custom tags allows you to push a single string into Mouseflow - one piece of information like Popup_Fired or Order_Placed - that is unique to your website's touchpoints and conversion process.

Here is a list of some of the items you might want to track with custom tags:

  • Events (e.g. modal clicked, abandoned cart, signed in)

  • Order status

  • Paid campaign ids

  • Error codes

  • Search terms

How to Setup Custom tags

Event-based Custom Tags

Event-based tags like clicks and hovers over visible elements on your page can be very easily set up (with zero coding required) using the Custom Tags Editor. The tool allows you to simply add and remove tags across all pages on your website.

You can access the Custom Tags Editor through the Mouseflow app by navigating to the relevant section in your Website Settings:

Alternatively, you can access the Custom Tags Editor by clicking on the 'Add filters' button and selecting 'Tag' > 'Edit Custom Tags' from the top of the Recordings list, Heatmaps list, or any other Mouseflow feature page:

To add a new tag:

  1. Click on 'Edit Custom Tags'

  2. Enter the page you wish to customize tags for

  3. Click on any page element you wish to add a tag to

  4. Add a name, trigger, and description (optional) for your tag

  5. Select between adding the tag to the 'Current page' or across 'All pages' on your website where the element is present

  6. Click 'Add' to create the new tag (and repeat steps 2-6 to add more tags)

  7. Click 'Save and close' to save your new tag(s)

Note: The new tag will be applied to future Recordings but will not be added to your existing Recordings retrospectively.

To remove a tag:

  1. Click on 'Edit Custom Tags'

  2. Enter the page you wish to remove the tag from

  3. Click on the 'x' next to the tag(s) you wish to remove

  4. Click 'Save and close' to remove the tag(s)

Note: The tag will stop being added to future Recordings but will not be removed from your existing Recordings retrospectively.

Other Types of Custom Tags

Setting up other types of custom tags, such as any tag for elements that cannot be clicked on your page or hovered over, requires a bit of coding.

If you have installed Mouseflow through Google Tag Manager (GTM), see our guide on setting up such tags in GTM. For any other installation method, see how you can customize the Mouseflow tracking code to add tags.

Create Virtual URLs Using the Custom Tags Editor

Mouseflow allows you to easily set up tag-based custom URLs (virtual pageviews) using the Custom Tags Editor. You may find more information about how to enable and use this feature in this help article.
